Isis Pharmaceuticals studies and works with antisense drug development, that target many different types of diseases. One disease in particular this company has been working to cure is high cholesterol. The drug, Mipomersen, is used to lower cholesterol by 28 percent in patients who have a gene that produces high levels of cholesterol. Yet, the positives of this drug are dominated by the side effects, according to Wall Street’s perspective, which include: high liver enzymes and fat deposits in the liver. Wall street investors were concerned that the liver toxicities found in the Mipomersen study could be a signal that Mipomersen is causing severe damage to patients’ livers.

Isis Pharmaceuticals shares were lowered 20 percent on Wednesday due this medical discovery and fears for potential liver damage to patients who use the drug, Mipomersen.
