Walgreen’s is now the largest drug store in the U.S. After buying 257 stores in the New York metropolitan area from Duane Reade, for $1.8 billion dollars, the drug store is a leading operator in the New York area. Buying the Duane Reade property has led to Walgreen’s purchase as being the highest sales per square foot in the U.S. industry. The company along with CVS Pharmacy are beginning to take over the drug store industry.
Walgreen’s has 7,160 stores that it has cultivated on it’s own throughout the U.S., but this has been its most major “shopping spree” the company has had in its total 109 years of existence. Though Walgreen’s has purchased the Duane Reade company, the company will keep its name and employees who worked for Duane Reade will stay on staff.
Walgreen’s shares have increase 27.7 percent from 27 percent.
